What is a USCIS Service Center and why does it matter?

USCIS Service Centers are the regional offices that actually process most paper applications and petitions — they're different from local field offices, which mainly handle interviews and in-person services.

The first three letters of your receipt number tell you which service center is handling your case — for example, IOE indicates an Elis (online) filing, while others like EAC, WAC, LIN, SRC, MSC, and NBC correspond to specific physical service centers.

This matters because processing times can genuinely differ between service centers for the exact same form — USCIS periodically shifts caseloads between centers to balance workload, which is also why your case might get "transferred" from one center to another mid-process. That's a routine operational move, not a sign anything is wrong with your case.

This is general information, not legal advice. For anything specific or unusual about your case, a licensed immigration attorney can advise on your situation directly.
