Back to Questions & Answers Interviews

What questions are asked at a marriage-based green card interview?

The core purpose of this interview is for the officer to assess whether the marriage is genuine, so most questions circle back to that in some way.

  • How you met, and the timeline of the relationship — when you started dating, got engaged, and married
  • Daily life together — who handles which household responsibilities, daily routines, each other's work schedules
  • Shared finances — joint accounts, who pays which bills
  • Family knowledge — details about each other's family members, birthdays, where they live
  • Living situation — your address, layout of your home, how long you've lived there

Officers sometimes interview spouses separately for exactly this reason — inconsistency in answers (even innocent, memory-related inconsistency) is what heightened scrutiny is designed to catch, not necessarily a sign of a problem. Bring evidence of a shared life beyond just what was on paper at filing: recent photos, updated joint documents, anything showing the relationship has continued since you applied.
