Back to Questions & Answers The Process

How long does USCIS typically take to respond to a case or inquiry?

This depends heavily on what you mean by "respond."

For overall case processing, timelines vary enormously by form type and service center — anywhere from a few months to well over a year. Check our Processing Times page for current typical ranges by form.

For a case inquiry (if your case is outside the normal processing time), USCIS generally aims to respond within about 30 days, though this varies.

For an RFE (Request for Evidence) response, USCIS doesn't guarantee a specific turnaround after you submit your response — it goes back into the regular review queue, which can take additional weeks to months depending on the office's current workload.

A quiet period with no updates is common at every stage and isn't necessarily a sign something is wrong — many cases sit in an active-review status for a long stretch before the next visible change.

This is general information, not legal advice. For anything specific or unusual about your case, a licensed immigration attorney can advise on your situation directly.
