Ukraine TPS Set to End October 19: What Ukrainian Applicants Should Know Now
October 17, 2026

Ukrainians with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) have an important date coming up. USCIS alerts say the Ukraine TPS designation and related benefits are set to terminate on Oct. 19, 2026. That is only two days from today.
The current end date comes from an earlier government notice. In a Federal Register notice, DHS extended the Ukraine designation for 18 months, beginning on April 20, 2025, and ending on October 19, 2026.
There is also a legal question that is still open. The law asks the Secretary of Homeland Security to decide on a TPS designation at least 60 days before it expires. For this designation, that deadline was August 20, 2026, and no determination has been published. Some immigration lawyers read the law this way: if the Secretary does not make a final decision at least 60 days before expiration, the designation is automatically extended for six months by operation of law. That would push the date to April 19, 2027.
However, the official picture is not settled. As of October 12, 2026, no Federal Register notice confirms the automatic extension, and the USCIS Ukraine TPS page still shows October 19, 2026. Until USCIS or DHS publishes something official, the safest assumption is the date USCIS keeps listing.
Work permits are a separate concern. USCIS has been sending notices to Ukraine TPS recipients whose TPS-based work permit renewals are still pending, saying their expired EADs are extended until Oct. 19, 2026. Employers are being told to use that same date when they complete Form I-9. Some lawyers note that the August notices extended certain expired TPS-based work permits only through October 19, 2026, the old end date.
The June 2026 Supreme Court ruling on Haiti and Syria may also matter here. In that case, the Court held that courts cannot override the federal government's determination about TPS status in most cases. This makes it harder for courts to block a termination, so waiting for a court to step in is a risky plan.
What this means for you: If you have Ukrainian TPS, or you are waiting on a TPS-related work permit or renewal, do not ignore the October 19 date. Keep copies of your TPS approval notice, your EAD, and every USCIS receipt notice. Check the official USCIS Ukraine TPS page and the Federal Register for new notices. Also be careful with rumors and social media posts, and do not pay anyone who promises a guaranteed outcome. Talk to an accredited immigration attorney or a recognized nonprofit legal provider soon, especially if your work permit, travel plans, or other benefits depend on TPS. If your renewal is still pending, ask a qualified professional how the October 19 date affects your own case.
USCIS case status can be checked on the official myUSCIS website or by using your receipt number. Remember that a status update alone does not tell you what happens after a designation ends, so keep watching official sources.
