TPS Work Permits Shift Again for Six Countries, Plus Haiti

If you or someone you know holds Temporary Protected Status from one of several countries, there's a new date to know — and it's earlier than what was announced just a couple weeks before it.
On July 10, USCIS's E-Verify program issued updated guidance moving the work authorization expiration date to July 17 for TPS holders from Burma (Myanmar), Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. For Haiti, the new date is July 24. This guidance replaces an earlier update from July 1 that had extended things to July 10 for all seven countries — so if you saw that earlier date, it's already outdated.
The back-and-forth traces back to a recent Supreme Court decision that affected how long automatic extension periods last for qualifying TPS applicants and beneficiaries. Because of that ruling, some of the automatic extensions that TPS holders were counting on have been reduced or eliminated entirely, which is why the timeline keeps shifting.
Employers who rely on E-Verify were also given updated instructions, and the M-274 Handbook for Employers — the guide that walks employers through verifying someone's right to work — was revised to reflect the change.
If this affects you, the practical takeaway is simple but important: don't assume the date you heard about last week is still accurate. TPS work authorization timelines have moved more than once in a short window, and an expired EAD can mean a real gap in someone's ability to legally work. If you're an employer with TPS employees from any of these countries, it's worth checking the very latest guidance directly rather than relying on what you were told even a few weeks ago.
This is general information, not legal advice. TPS status involves country-specific rules that change often — an immigration attorney or accredited representative can confirm exactly where a specific case stands.
